Paid Writing Workshop Strategy Session
Poets and writers: build, price, market, and sell your own paid virtual writing workshops
For years, someone else has handled everything that happens before your workshop begins: the flyer, the registration page, the fee, the participants an organization already found for you.
You know how to run the room. Now you want to offer your own workshop, and you're figuring out how to make that happen.
In a one-on-one 60-minute strategy session, we’ll talk through whatever you’re deciding, whether that’s what to teach, what to charge, or how to reach people. I’ll share what I’ve learned from teaching workshops and from building and selling my own.
And listen, the first time I offered a virtual workshop on my own, nobody registered.
That same workshop had filled when I taught it for an organization, so the workshop wasn’t the problem. Selling it was.
The next time I offered it, about a week and a half into promoting it, I changed how I talked about it.
I spoke directly to the person I wanted in the room, got specific about what the workshop offered, and stopped holding myself back from being seen in new ways. And registrations came in.
What we can work on
Bring one question or several. We’ll spend our time on whatever you most want help figuring out. Our conversation will likely center on a few of these:
CONCEPT AND AUDIENCE
I have a few ideas. How do I decide which to offer first, and who is it really for?
PRICING
What do I charge when organizations have always set my fee?
STRUCTURE
One session or a multi-week series? How many people should I include?
MARKETING
What do I say in my first post, and who do I say it to?
LOGISTICS AND TIMING
When should I run it, before the end of the year or in 2027, and how far ahead do I open registration?
Why work with me
I believe poets and writers deserve to get paid. And I want to see more of us getting paid for our gifts, on our own terms.
You don’t need to wait until an organization invites you to teach a workshop. You can create your own workshops and offer them.
You can create your own opportunities to earn from your gifts and expertise.
Imagine being delighted to see that there are people who are excited to pay you directly for what only YOU can uniquely offer!
And you can teach from the comfort of your own home or anywhere else in the world.
I’ve made the move you’re considering: from teaching workshops for organizations to designing, pricing, and selling my own paid virtual workshops. People have signed up and paid. I’m still doing it because I love it, even while teaching full time.
I’ve facilitated workshops for a range of ages since 2018, including five-day camps at Millsaps College’s McMullan Young Writers Workshop and through the University of Mississippi’s Pre-College Programs, virtual multi-week workshops for Kitchen Table Literary Arts and The Beautiful Project, and a workshop session at Lees-McRae College.
I teach at an arts high school, where I run the literary arts department and facilitate five nine-week workshops each year in poetry, fiction, and playwriting. I’m a Mississippi STAR Teacher Award recipient and a three-time Scholastic Gold Educator Award recipient.
Author of Beyond the Watershed (CavanKerry Press, 2025), longlisted for the Maya Angelou Book Award and named one of Poets & Writers’ Ten Best Debut Poets for 2026.
